Wall Street: Movie Review

The Movie Wall Street is a sensational movie that presents a tale of wealth that is presented by director Oliver Stone. The theme of this movie is that greed is good, with the main characters in the movie being Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas), the antihero in this movie. Gekko is idolized by a young broker Bud Fox (Charlie Sheen) who only sees Gekko as the successful trader that he is.

When thinking of money, there are two schools that come to it. There is the school that this is an expanding resource which everyone can equally share and be equally happy and there is another that believes that money isn’t made but is simply transferred form one user to the next. This is the philosophy that Gekko, a highly successful but greedy and ruthless trader believed in. According To Gekko, the rich become richer off the hard toil of others. This philosophy is what is advised to Fox, a newbie in the stock markets.

As the movie progresses Fox keeps on looking for ways of meeting up with the powerful Gekko but to no avail. His persistence is not waivered and he gets this lucky break to meet Gekko at a birthday party where they meet up and agree to a working relationship.

As the partnership of Gekko and Fox progresses, Fox is introduced into a shady world of dealings where he is taught of how to degrade his morals and ethics by a large degree where they make money and Fox starts living the life of fast dealings and all the finer things in life. This causes disharmony between Fox and his estranged father.

As time progresses, Fox comes to the realization of the shady dealings that he has had and the effect that it has caused to people. This prompts him to go on a new mission, that of slaying the dragon in Gekko.

This is quite a great movie to watch as it outlines the intricacies of the relationships that take place off the trading floor. It is presented in quite a simple language that you do not need to be a stock broker for you to follow, as the main story line is based on human interactions.

The ironic thing to this movie is that its release in 1987 came just before the stock market crash that was witnessed. The success of this movie can be attributed as a reason why it earned an Oscar award.
